Automobile Industry Environmental Management Program (EMP)

As civilization progresses, the automobile industry continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Any kind of industrial progress is bound to lead to environmental problems through various kinds of pollution. However, there are specified ways of dealing with these issues. Read on to find out about environmental management programs for the automobile industry.

The automobile industry forms a major global production unit. The automobile industry produces various types of automobiles and also carries out repair jobs including the washing of vehicles from time to time. All industrial and office set-ups possess a maintenance unit for the automobiles used in their sectors. Servicing, washing and cleaning of vehicles are the most important activities for the automobile industry. The pollutants emitted are to be taken proper care of as per legal requirements. For this reason, it is essential to note down the significant environment aspects for the automobile industry.

Automobile Industry Aspect: Emission of volatile organic compounds

Case Study for the Evaluation of Automobile Industry Environmental Aspects

Activity: Servicing, Washing and Cleaning of Vehicles in the Automobile Industry

Identification of Automobile Industry Aspects and Impacts (Inputs and Outputs of a manufacturing process or operation):

Aspect: (a) Emission of volatile organic compounds; (b) Spillage of chemicals used for washing purposes; (c) Discharge of vehicle wastes to stream

During the servicing, washing and cleaning of vehicles, the following are the significant environmental aspects and impacts:

Automobile Industry Aspect: Emission of volatile organic compounds
Automobile Industry Impact: Increase in the ground level of the ozone layer

Automobile Industry Aspect: Discharge of vehicle wastes to streams
Automobile Industry Impact: Degradation of aquatic habitat and drinking water supply

Automobile Industry Aspect: Spillage of chemicals used for washing purposes
Automobile Industry Impact: Soil and groundwater contamination

Evaluation of Automobile Industry Environmental Aspects

1.
Aspect:
Emission of organic volatile compounds
Evaluation of Impact (Severity of Impact Scale: 1-5; Trivial-1, Fatal 5): 3
Legal and Other Required Regulations: Legal
Significant/Non-significant: Significant
OCP No.: OCP D/N No. 01

2.
Aspect:
Discharge of vehicle wastes to stream
Evaluation of Impact (Severity of Impact Scale: 1-5; Trivial-1, Fatal 5): 3
Legal and Other Required Regulations: Legal
Significant/Non-significant: Significant
OCP No.: OCP D/N No. 01

3.
Aspect:
Spillage of chemicals used for washing purposes
Evaluation of Impact (Severity of Impact Scale: 1-5; Trivial-1, Fatal 5): 3
Legal and Other Required Regulations: Legal
Significant/Non-significant: Significant
OCP No.: OCP D/N No. 01

Environmental Objectives and Targets for the Automobile Industry

An Environment Management Program (EMP) analysis consists of the following:
Objective: To avoid pollution during the servicing, washing and cleaning of vehicles in the car industry.
Present Status: Washing done in an unspecified work area.
Target: Construction of bund for the cleaning of vehicles.

Environmental Management Program for the Automobile Industry

Objective: Construction of bund for the cleaning of vehicles.
Present Status: Washing done in buildings.
Target: Constructing a bund where the vehicles can be washed.
Responsibility: Section Head

A format form will also have to be created stating all these aspects. Find out how you should go about it by reading the article called Environmental Management Program. If you want to know more about the various terms that are involved in the creation of an environment management program, read the article on Aspects. Here, I have also discussed the various steps involved during aspect analysis.
